Inclusive Rugby Program

The Inclusive Rugby Programme leverages the power of sport to address social challenges in Hong Kong, with a particular focus on youth with special educational needs (SEN). The program consists of two key components: the Special Schools Rugby Training Programme and the Po Leung Kuk Buddy Rugby Programme. By involving these students in rugby, the program seeks to enhance their social inclusion, self-esteem, and communication skills.

Key Objectives

Tackle Discrimination and Isolation
Create a team sport environment that breaks down barriers, fosters inclusivity, and combats discrimination.

Boost Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence
Leverage the enjoyment of rugby to cultivate pride and enhance participants’ self-worth.

Develop Interpersonal SkillsStrengthen communication and collaboration skills through structured rugby training and activities, enabling better social interactions and teamwork.

This Program integrates the Special Schools Rugby Training Programme and the Po Leung Kuk Buddy Rugby Programme

Special Schools Rugby Training Programme

Each year during the summer (July and August), an invitation will be sent to our 10 partner SEN schools. Teachers from each school will enroll one class of 20 students to participate in a maximum of 16 training sessions, depending on the school’s availability. A Competition Day will be hosted at King’s Park at the end of March, before the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, as a concluding event. It is expected that each school will have at least 12 students participating annually, with around 110 total students across all schools.

Po Leung Kuk Buddy Rugby Programme

The Buddy Rugby Programme promotes social inclusion by pairing SEN students with mainstream school students to play, learn, and grow together through joint training sessions and events.

This inclusive rugby program involves one SEN school and one mainstream school from Po Leung Kuk. The participating students from the SEN school are those already enrolled in the Special Schools Rugby Training Programme, while students from the mainstream school are newly recruited. A maximum of 8 joint training sessions will be held at each school. Two events will be held annually: "Christmas Fun Day" in December and "Fun Sharing Day" in May. It is anticipated that each school will have around 15 students participating annually, totaling approximately 30 students.
